I'm Bertram Vassell, founder of Vassell Strategic Solutions. I built this organization around this central theme: helping grassroots business owners grow in a way that strengthens their community — their teams, their customers, their neighborhoods.

My path here was anything but linear. As a child, I was passionate about the arts but drawn to teams and helping others. I was a quiet kid— deeply analytical about everything I encountered. That habit of mind led me toward systemic improvement and organizational development long before I‘d truly understood them. The entry-level jobs I held in my twenties exposed me to the patterns and principles that successful businesses employ and the nuances that distinguished success from mediocrity.

I carried that curiosity into the U.S. Army, where I served as an aircraft mechanic on the UH-60 Blackhawk, learning firsthand how those precise work together to produce flight in a seemingly impossible way. I later worked in manufacturing, helping build components for the F-35. Despite the excitement of these career opportunities, it was leading young soldiers — mentoring them, guiding them through their obstacles, helping them find their path forward — that most captivated me. I was teaching as I learned the principles of servant leadership.

That's also what pulled me into business education. What began as a practical step toward promotion became something I couldn't put down. Today I hold an MBA with a focus on leadership and business principles. I'm also continuing my study of business psychology — the discipline that looks at how organizations shape people, and how culture and community move through the life of a business.

I believe in building businesses where growth, culture, and finances aren't competing priorities. I know that that small businesses can gain insight from the same principles that power large organizations — principles I've spent nearly a decade learning inside and out.
